[Song of the Day] - 'Old & Gray' - Maps & Atlases

Today's Song of the Day is brought to you by Maps & Atlases. 'Old & Gray' appears on their 2012 album Beware & Be Grateful. At its most basic, this tune interweaves a narrative of loss and love, with vivid imagery of missing the person that, at one time, you built a life with. With layers that sit like rings on a tree, Maps & Atlases reveal a relationship that feels real and relatable. Despite the overcast of an end, the song manages to lack bitterness, and without holding on to hope, it still seems to offer it. The high and low pitch of lead guitarist and vocalist Dave Davison, complete with the drifting guitar riffs, haunting violin and occasional piano interludes, tie nicely with the theme, and remind me of the intrinsic sound of the band - seemingly hollow and hallow at the same time.

Please enjoy, and remember, when you are old and gray, I hope that someone holds you the way I would.
